The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kamuli, Ms Rose Birungi, has announced plans to arrest both parents and children found working in sugarcane plantations.

This announcement came during the conclusion of a two-day community dialogue organized by the East African Sub-regional Support Initiative (EASSI) at Kiyunga Primary School in Kisozi sub-county, Kamuli district.

The RDC emphasized the need for collective responsibility in curbing teenage pregnancies, stating, “We cannot ignore the role of parents and the environment in which our children grow. By addressing the issue at its roots, we aim to create a safer community for our youth.”

The community dialogue was part of a broader initiative that included a two-day health camp, providing free treatment to over 2000 individuals for various health concerns such as cancer, HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis among others. This significant health outreach was a collaborative effort between EASSI and the local government of Kamuli district.

Birungi also urged fathers to play an active role in their children’s lives, emphasizing, “Responsibility starts at home. Fathers need to be actively involved in guiding and supporting their children.”

Mere Leo Ewoma, the Kamuli District Community Development Officer, expressed gratitude to the NGOs involved, saying, “We appreciate the partnership with EASSI and other NGOs. Their support aligns with our commitment to community well-being.”

Shaira Kawamara, the Executive Director of EASSI, acknowledged Kamuli district’s unity and collaboration, stating, “The success of these initiatives is a sign of  dedication and unity within Kamuli district. We value our partnership with the local government.”
