Tanzania has approved $160.5m (sh568b) as a starting budget for the construction of the 341km Isaka-Mwanza Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line. Mwanza Port is located on the shores of Lake Victoria.
The main ports on the lake are in Kisumu in Kenya; Mwanza, Musoma, Bukoba in Tanzania; Entebbe, Port Bell, and Jinja in Uganda.
The funds were approved at the Dar es Salaam State House. During the approval, President Samia Suluhu Hassan urged Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) Managing Director, Masanja Kadogosa to keenly supervise the implementation of the ongoing railway projects in the country.
Kadogosa said the funds were timely for building the Isaka-Mwanza SGR line. He said that the corporation has recorded good progress with regards to the SGR project with two of the sections; from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro and Morogoro-Makutopora already constructed.
